SO YOU WANT TO BE A STAR!
PROPOSED DRAMA CLUB

Are you interested in acting, script writing, studio camera operation, switching, lighting, set design, graphics, public relations, sound management, music or developing your producing and management skills?

We are proposing a co-operative workshop one evening a week, probably from 6pm to 9.30pm, and would love you to join us. (There will be a minimal charge of $5.00 per meeting which includes refreshments during the mid session break)

For a long time now, apart from short video narratives done as student exercises in the various tertiary and secondary educational institutions, CTV Perth has not really worked hard to develop a drama presence. Several of our members have worked in the field of satirical comedy sketches but we have yet to explore the whole field of drama, which is why we would like to give you the opportunity to be part of an exciting new drama club.

This invitation is open to all of the creative community within the Perth area and naturally we would like you to take out membership, details of how to do this are on our website.

Closing date for enquiries and applications is Wednesday 30 April. We will then set our first meeting date and workshop and make beautiful art together!

Don’t miss out, contact us by telephone or email (and for heaven’s sake if you email be sure to give us your telephone number so we can call you back!)

CTV Perths Two Producers and Editors!
Jason and Jono

Jason Collins has been working with us at CTV Perth, every Wednesday from 9:30 to 5:30, since early February. Since then, he has been editing and filming the TV Show, Photography WA as well as doing a few shows for Perth City Talks.

As well as coming in on Wednesday, Jason has had to come in various other times during the week to work on his current film projects.

Jason has always had a passion for film as before he came to CTV he used to film Surf Movies on the East Coast and after he leaves us he hopes to get a job filming and producing.

His next assignment for CTV is the Surf Show Surfing Times, which is based on surfing around WA. Jason will be doing all the production, filming, editing for the show and even host it himself!

He reflects back on his time at CTV Perth as a great experience with his most enjoyable part of his time here being the filming.

2008 will mark Johns third year at CTV Perth where his editing and directing skills have been put to good use. In 2005 he helped with Buddhas Birthday and in 2006 he worked on Harmony Week, the West End Fashion Festival and the Myer Fashion Parade.

He has also written, directed, edited and acted in the comedies Busted, which takes up most of his working time at the moment and BBN both of which have been broadcasted on Foxtels Aurora channel and soon to be shown on Youtube in a special half hour format.

Before working at CTV, John studied journalism and feels the freedom to do his own thing alongside the fantastic facilities has helped him gain much valued work experience to help push on with his career.

Sevenoaks Payback
Yesterday Sevenoaks student Caitlyn Latemore, interviewed two of her colleagues from her school who are at CTV Perth on work experience. This article allows Lyndon and Jamie to do a counter interview. Each student hopes to pursue their drean career..

Caitlyn Latemore, a bright enthusiastic girl, is one of the three, hoping to gain experience in relation to journalism.

So why is Caitlyn at CTV Perth? “There is a variety of media involved within CTV, not only journalism.”
When asked about the possibility of studying journalism at university, Caitlyn stated “It could happen but it's not exactly what I have planned for my future. I am using this opportunity to find out more about media.”

Caitlyn's biggest passion is music and listens to several different genres, namely hardcore/metalcore. Because of this she has a desire to work with these kinds of bands on a professional level. “I would really like to work with bands particularly those within the metalcore scene.”

During her time at CTV Perth Caitlyn will have to do a lot of work to reach her goal. One thing that she will be doing is writing mock articles about her favourite bands. Caitlyn's research will consist not only of the musical history of the bands, but the lifestyles of the members as well.

Although Caitlyn isn't completely certain about her career choice, she remains eager to experiment with different ideas until she finds a career that best suits her.

G'DAY FROM WA - and Thea Adams
Thea is no longer our newest recruit and has served out her work experience contract and is on her way to the frozen myst of southern New Zealand.
She must have had a good time here because she left many gifts for other members, namely a bottle of bubbly for the chairman who is now honor bound to write very nicely about her.

We are very sad to see her go because she has been a most committed and energetic worker. Not only did she work extensively on the launch at Cinema Paradiso of CRIME AND PUNISHMENT but in the last 2-3 weeks she generated two quarter hour episodes of G'DAY FROM WA under the mentorship of Kelvin Laurent, the producer of that series.

G'DAY covers WA activities and lifestyle, and she undertook to make a series on National Parks, which was entitled THE ABORIGINAL EXPERIENCE.

To do this she was Presenter, Researcher, Assistant Camera and Editor on our Adobe Premiere.

The two National Parks were Kings Park and Yanchep, and they were made with the wholehearted assistance of local Aboriginals.

Each episode showed how both Kings Park and Yanchep could provide the basis of the past lifestyle of Aboriginal people over many thousands of years.

The first episode covered simple tools, bush medicine, musical instruments, and a demonstration by a single person of ancient dancing. For example in bush medicine the common peppermint tree had been used in that culture much as we use the modern day vapouriser.

In the second episode the cuddly Koala bears of Yanchep featured large with some interesting insights into their biology and the fact that their babies are less than a five cent piece. The other highlight undoubtedly were the Yanchep caves that covered a tour which demonstrated the history of the formation of stalactites and stalagmites.

Future developments for the cave system were outlined and there will be an attempt to build up the water reserve because the original pools of water had dried out as long ago as fifteen years.

The episode finishes with a look at local wildlife, especially birds namely the Black Cockatoo and water birds.

These episodes will shortly appear on Aurora FOXTEL.

We wish Thea the very best and hope she sends us fresh material from both New Zealand and the UK.

Work Experience At CTV
It's a Monday morning, the streets are filled with an air of gloom on a rainy late March day. Despite the bleakness of the morning, two boys remain eager to commence work experience at CTV Productions. A quaint little building packed with years of knowledge and worldly affairs, whose job is to inform the world of it's affairs through television.

I was given the task of finding out why the boys were here and what they want to gain from their experience at CTV.

Jamie Sullivan is a year 12 student from Sevenoaks Senior College. I spoke to Jamie about what he wants to get out of his time at CTV. "I couldn't find an official animation center so I decided that film/tv could be a pathway to a career in animation" says Jamie.

Jamie hopes to gain media experience in the hope of gaining an entry into a TAFE animation course.

Jamie's interest in many forms of animation, particularly anime, is the main factor contributing to his career choice.

Jamie wants to leave CTV productions with an understanding of the media industry, specifically in the field of animation.

Lyndon Medal is also completing work experience at CTV and attends the same school as Jamie Sullivan. I had a chat to Lyndon about his interest in the world of media.

Lyndon seems eager to pursue a career in audio engineering and thought that CTV could be the place that will give him the experience he requires.

Like Jamie, Lyndon is hoping to gain TAFE entry and build a pathway to a university course in Audio Engineering.

Lyndon expresses a great interest in music and wants to use audio experience to pursue a career within the music industry.

McBain, John McBain
John McBain has been on and off at CTV Perth since 2006. He is currently a producer member and helps out with grants and general day to day tasks of keeping the place running.

One of the major projects he has worked on while at CTV is the Crime and Justice series, Perth City Talks and the Department of Environmental Health Report. He has also helped host segments such as the debate on GM Foods on Perth Talks, the Red Bull Air Race and the Kim Beazley Memorial. He claims the most interesting issue he has worked on is the State of Environment Report as he had been involved in various similar subjects in his life over the last 30 years.

At the moment John is currently working on a new series called Sustain, which has already been approved by the committee – based on the retro fitting of an old house, he is currently looking for sponsors for the show. He is also looking at a Youth Media Model down in South Lakes.

Before working at CTV Perth, John was an organic farmer for 30 years and was a member of various community groups which has allowed him to bring his own personal experiences to the issues that CTV tackle. He was also a consultant of overseas films and worked in real estate. From 2000 to 2004 he traveled all around Australia filming and drinking!

John believes that the media is at a very interesting stage at the moment with the prices of filming and editing so low and with so much range in media it presents so many opportunities for everyone and anyone to get involved.

When asked what his favorite part of working at CTV was he could not pinpoint one aspect down and said he liked it all!

The Amaneal Show!
Amaneal Woldeselassie came to Perth from Sudan in December, 2001. He attended Perth Modern School where he excelled in learning the English language before moving to Kent Street Senior High School and eventually ending up at Sevenoaks Senior College for his final two years of schooling.

Amaneal took a great interest in the film and TV industry whilst at school and won the Best Film of the Year award for "Over Kill" in 2005. In October 2007 Amanea and his close friend, Sen Lim, decided that they would create and star in a video for their schools graduation ceremony that would showcase all the people and memories that made up the school year.
The short film was such a huge success, with a large amount of students demanding copies, that Amaneal decided to take out a film membership on Myspace (www.myspace.com/amanealshow) so that anyone interested could view the video freely.

Amaneal now has multiple videos on his website, including another graduation video that he created for his younger brothers school Yule Brook College and intends to further add to his collection in the upcoming months.

At the moment Amaneal is currently working with us at CTV Perth, where he has been since mid 2007, promoting and editing TV shows such as GALLERY WATCH and CTV TALKS TO PERTH that air on Foxtels Aurora channel every week. On days when he isn't in the studio editing, Amaneal works on completing his Screen Certificate III at Central TAFE.

His latest projects have seen him working with Eighty Five Entertainment creating music videos for local RnB and Hip Hop artist, K.i.B. Everyone at CTV Perth believes that Amaneal has a great career in front of him and hope that one day he will have the opportunity to work with his heroes Kanye West and Hype Williams.

THE FUTURE IS OURS / YOURS

Recently from Guildford Grammar School we had two Work Experience students, Stewart Palmer and Edward Souti who came for two short days and they looked at scripting especially in regard to a short script one had written on suicide and also the script filesof our CRIME AND PUNISHMENT SERIES.

Since our earlier Teen shows developed by Simon Hydzik we have not had much youth programming, but recently we have had a resurgence of interest in this area . For example we have received the first instalment of HIT AND RUN, a satirical show and a recent star addition who has gone on to a TAFE course, Amaneal Woldeselassie is finalising his documentary on a young
African musician who plays regularly in Perth.

So what do the young people think of media, how do they use it and how do they see the future and what could they bring to CTV. We asked Edward and Stewart to interview each other and share their opinions.

Edi: I use the media for entertainment. The main medium I use is television. Satirical shows and dramas are my favourites. I also watch the news and current affairs shows so I know what is happening in the world. I also watch television because it has become embedded in my lifestyle.

Stewart: I watch television not only to be entertained but to learn things about the world I live in also. I watch a lot of documentaries.Historical ones are my favourite but I also like science ones as well. This influences the way I see certain issues.

Edi: I don't read magazines much but when I do I read car magazines and political magazines. I find that they are a good source of information with in- depth articles about current political issues.

Stewart: I also read a lot magazines mainly ones to do with music that have articles about local bands and where they are performing. I also read science magazines as they are very informative on new discoveries.

Edi: I listen to the radio mostly on car trips. Popular music is what I listen to the most. Radio also has news and current affairs on for most of the day. I sometimes listen to classical music as I am a musician myself.

Stewart: I listen to a lot of local radio and internet radio stations. I listen to jazz and fusion jazz mainly, but I will sometimes listen to independent bands and classic rock. I also like underground radio stations. Music is a very important part of life. I listen to it all the time; while I am working; while I am relaxing and while I am exercising.

Edi: I do not read a lot of books. But I do read quite a few web articles about technology and computers.

Stewart: I do read books, I read one hour a day. I read mostly crime novels and thrillers. I read mainly for entertainment but I have to read for education at school.

Edi: Media in the future will become more based on advertisments and less about the shows and news. This will happen to the point that shows will become just extended ads. I also think that the internet will have a big impact on the media in the future with less televsion sets actually being used.

Stewart: I think portable televison will become viable in the future. So televison tuners will be built in to mobile phones, MP3 players and laptop computers. I also think mixed media will become much more important for business and it will mean that news will have less interpretations and most ideas will be the same. Music will also continue on the path it has been on lately with it becoming even more portable.

Edi: Media these days seems to be more in our daily routines, at school for research, at home on the compute. It seems like everywhere you go, media is present.

Stewart: I use media constantly at school, for homework, for recreation and the only time I seem to not be using media is when I'm sleeping. It's unaviodable, there is media everywhere you turn.

Edi: Media is important to me because it has become part of my lifestyle. It would hard to go without it. Media has become not only entertainment for me but also a form of education.

Stewart: For me media completely changes the way you view the the world . It has a big influence in my life mainly because I use it all the time.

If we were to create a television show we would make a music panel show. This would be very popular with our target audience which would be teenagers between the ages of 14-19. The aim of the show would be to broaden the types of music teenagers listen to. This would be achieved by focusing on a different genre each week. This helps the show appeal to a wide range of music lovers. The show would be based in perth and would feature music from up and coming unknown bands from Perth. This would appeal to many viewers as most music shows are based in the Eastern States.

To appeal to our target audience, we would have to have a host that is between the ages of 19-25. The reason for this being is that teenagers could relate to the host and therefore make the show seem a more attractive option for viewing.

It would very much be centered around the viewer with options for the viewers to decide what they see. The show would also feature segments on things that are related to music such as video clips and guest musicians. Segments would be varied but would included a public opinion segment, fashion segement and a comedy segment.
